Stretching from Palm Beach down to Miami, South Florida's Atlantic shoreline has been given a rather ostentatious nickname: the Gold Coast.

Most people say it's a comment on the area's glitzy and luxurious reputation. And considering the wealth and good taste in the tri-county area, which encompasses Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties, the nickname is hardly a stretch. But it's not the only thing golden in these parts. There's the near-constant summer sunshine and countless bronzed bodies on the miles of beaches here — beaches which, unlike the white sand on the Gulf Coast, have a decidedly golden hue. There's the gold jewelry dripping off the snowbird retirees who call this area home, for at least part of the year. There's even the saffron-rich arroz con pollo, a signature dish among South Florida's Cuban community.

You'll hear critics argue that the Gold Coast has turned into one undifferentiated stretch of high-rise condominiums and resorts. And though the area has seen more than its fair share of development, this reading totally misses out on the unique, and uniquely Floridian, appeal of the many beach towns along the coast. From trendy Delray Beach to charming Deerfield Beach to artsy Hollywood and sporty Pompano Beach, these towns prove that, no matter how much you dip them in gold, the laid-back, old Florida vibe will still shine through.
