Mountain-inspired, but far from rustic, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Steamboat has a welcoming, traditional vibe. The seasonal ski shuttle whisks you to Gondola Square in minutes – or if you’re there for the stunning Steamboat summer months, it’s an easy 15-minute walk (or even faster bike ride) to the ski village and base activities like Saturday night Movies on the Mountain. Onsite amenities abound, from a year-round indoor pool and two summer-only outdoor pools, to a sauna/steam room for recovering from your overly ambitious choice of trails. Three outdoor hot tubs give you plenty of options for an aprés dinner soak – or head for the game room and face off across the pool table.

Inviting, traditionally furnished one- and two-bedroom suites sleep four to eight mighty trail-conquerors. And the well appointed kitchen helps you keep said conquerors from getting hungry out there in the elements. (Stuff pockets full of energy bars for a between-meal boost.) Your private balcony is ready and waiting for DIY après ski or après hike festivities. Or stay cozy and warm inside with a seat next to the glowing fireplace. Gather around the dining table for dinner, and once the last square of lasagna has been snapped up, take a DVD vote (shh, raise of hands only, please), and get the popcorn started. See if you have any takers on your offer to toss in laundry, then do a quick inventory of gloves, goggles and gators to make sure everything that left in the morning made it back in the afternoon.

Steamboat’s full mountain range includes Mount Werner and Pioneer Ridge, plus Christie, Sunshine, Thunderhead and Storm Peaks – ski, snowboard, hike or bike your way around them all. The nearby Routt National Forest is a great place for snowmobiling. Ride single file behind the guide through snow-covered pine forests, stopping for pics along the Continental Divide, then pick up more speed as you do a few loops around wide open meadows. Summer offers up a whole new world of possibilities, from open-air concerts to the Steamboat Pro Rodeo series. Take in the gorgeous Yampa Valley views from the Guided Gourmet Hike up Mt. Werner, followed by lunch at Thunderhead Lodge. Got a group of golfers? Play the Keith Foster designed Haymaker course, blissfully free of any nearby commercial or residential development, so there’s nothing interrupting nature’s stunning vistas in every direction. Choose a motorized cart, walking cart or toss your clubs on the back of a golf bike, then later, grab a table on the terrace of the Patio Grill to brag about the day’s best shots over burgers and beer.
